Fundación Secretariado Gitano has launched its 14th Annual Report on "Discrimination and the Roma Community" (now available in English here) at an event in Madrid. The Secretary of State for Equality, Soledad Murillo, opened the launch event

The 2018 report presents 232 cases of discrimination collected by the FSG and analyses progress made during this year. The report also includes examples of good practices and the most recent case-law on discrimination.

This year's report focuses specifically on the experience of Roma women who are often exposed to intersectional discrimination on grounds of gender and ethnic origin.

"The objective of this report is to raise awareness of discrimination against the Roma community on grounds of ethnic origin, and to show how it affects their daily lives and prevents them from accessing their fundamental rights," said Isidro Rodríguez, general director of Fundación Secretariado Gitano during his opening speech.

232 registered cases of discrimination

This edition of the report includes 232 cases of discrimination on grounds of ethnic origin that have been registered by the 54 offices FSG has throughout Spain. These are cases of discrimination in the media and internet (101 cases); in the field of employment (29 cases), in access to goods and services (44 cases), in the Police Services (3 cases), in education (17 cases), housing (17 cases) and in accessing and using Health services (9 cases).

Regarding the profile of the victims, cases collected affect both men/women equally, although data show an increase in the number of female victims compared to previous reports. As for the age of the victims, it is also noted that discrimination affects mainly young Roma (between the ages of 16 and 45) with a total of 199 people.

Tackling multiple discrimination of Roma women

Roma women experience gender inequality like the rest of women and also face ethnic prejudices and stereotypes. This puts them in a particularly vulnerable position that needs to be addressed through a feminist and anti-racist approach.

Fundación Secretariado Gitano proposes to work from an integrated approach that takes into account the reality of women who do not belong to the majority group and who experience disadvantages that are specific to that group and which are difficult to overcome.

Our work on discrimination and anti-gypsyism

FSG supports and counsel victims of hate crime and discrimination and brings cases before the courts. We also coordinate The Assistance and Counselling Service for Victims of Racial or Ethnic Discrimination  formed by seven other organisations. In 2017 we accompanied 401 victims of discrimination, brought 11 cases of discrimination before Court and trained 2,530 key players in the fight against discrimination.
