UNICEF Spain, Iberdrola and Fundación Secretariado Gitano present a training and employment programme in renewable energies for young people in vulnerable situations
  • The programme, co-financed by the European Union through the Next Generation Funds, and Iberdrola, aims to promote the opportunities offered by the green economy and connect it with highly vulnerable young people in Spanish regions, promoting their social and labour inclusion.

  • It is part of the ‘Generation Unlimited España’ alliance, promoted by UNICEF Spain, and of which Iberdrola and Fundación Secretariado Gitano are members, which aims to connect young people with training, employment and social impact opportunities, bringing together the public, private, academic and civil society sectors.

UNICEF Spain, Iberdrola and Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) have presented this morning their collaboration in the TándEM Programme for training and employment in renewable energies, implemented by FSG within the framework of ‘Generation Unlimited España’, a multi-stakeholder alliance that seeks the social and labour inclusion of young people in vulnerable situations.

The TándEM programme is aimed at young people who need access to qualifications and work experience, and has the collaboration of the City Council of León and the Federation of Employers of León (FELE). This initiative is being developed throughout the year in León, with a training part in the classroom and another part carrying out the assembly and maintenance of photovoltaic installations in different municipal buildings in the city.

The programme, funded by the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (Next Generation EU), responds to a double challenge: the training of young people without qualifications and their work experience in relevant sectors, such as green jobs, favouring the development of their life projects.

"We have the same opportunities in the field of renewable energies"- Paula Andrea, 24 years old, young beneficiary of the programme.

"Having a job with good conditions makes me feel better" - Antonio, 26 years old, young beneficiary of the programme.

This morning's meeting was attended by the Mayor of León, José Antonio Diez; the President of the UNICEF Castile and Leon Committee, María Eugenia García Rincón; the Deputy Director of Fundación Secretariado Gitano, Isidro Rodríguez; the delegate of Iberdrola in Castile and Leon, Miguel Calvo; the Deputy Provincial Director of SEPE in León, Mª Trinidad Alonso, and the head of the ‘Generation Unlimited Spain’ alliance, Marta Contreras, who highlighted the training and support provided to the students.

The programme is part of the Generation Unlimited (GenU) alliance, promoted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 and driven by UNICEF, which aims to connect young people with training and employment opportunities.

Scope of the 'Generation Unlimited Spain' partnership

In Spain, Generation Unlimited is promoted by UNICEF Spain and arises as a response to the situation of vulnerability of many young people in the country, with the aim of advancing towards their social and labour inclusion. The alliance is articulated from a multi-stakeholder perspective that involves the private sector, the public sector, social entities, academia and the participation of young people, who will be the protagonists in leading their future.

It uses innovative training methodologies, accompaniment of young people and work experience in companies, generating and promoting a model of socio-labour inclusion focused on digitalisation and green employment in order to influence public and corporate policies so that it can be replicated and scaled and foster more inclusive and quality employment.

Iberdrola plays an active role in the design of innovative training models, also involving its value chain to promote training and employment opportunities for young people in the green economy. These models are implemented in collaboration with social entities such as Fundación Secretariado Gitano, Fundación Santa María la Real, NGO Cesal, Federación de Plataformas Sociales Pinardi, Fundación San Juan del Castillo-Pueblos Unidos, Fundación Tomillo, Asociación Norte Joven, Fundación Exit and Nantik Lum, which work directly with them, promoting the opportunities offered by the green economy and the promotion of climate action.
