Nicolas Schmit, European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, has been visiting Spain on November 25 and 26.

During his two-day visits he hold different working meetings with various ministers of the Spanish Government such as Yolanda Díaz, Second Vice President of the Government and Minister of Labor and Social Economy; José Luis Escrivá, Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration; Nadia Calviño, First Vice President of the Government and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation; Ione Belarra, Minister of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda; and Pablo Hernández de Cos, Governor of the Bank of Spain.

On Friday 26th, in Seville, he hold a meeting with the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, with the idea of ​​knowing first-hand the results and testimonies of the beneficiaries of the projects that we carry out financed by the European Social Fund, such as the Acceder, Promociona and Calí programmes.

From Fundación Secretariado Gitano joined the meeting Isidro Rodríguez, general manager of FSG, Juan Reyes, director of the FSG in Andalusia,  Staff of the FSG Office in Seville and the International Department of FSG.

In his speech at the meeting with the FSG in Seville, the European Commissioner mentioned the recent approval of the new Strategic Framework of the European Union for equality, inclusion and participation of the Roma people 2021-2030 and stressed that “inclusion is possible . Non-discrimination has to be a daily effort. There are many lessons to be learned from other countries and I am very happy to meet you and have been here today ”.

Nicolas Schmit, addressing the young Roma participating in the FSG programs who attended the meeting, pointed out that “we are all Europeans. And we Commissioners have a mandate to safeguard the rights of citizens. We work for you. What has been done here in 20 years with the support of the European Union and all the Europeans who have contributed is something beautiful. Listening to your personal experiences of your successes and difficulties, knowing that with the support of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano you have found your way, opportunity and you are on the way to have a better life for yourself, your families, children and children to come. And those are the values ​​of the European Union. As Commissioner, I can tell you that we are working towards it. I am very happy to see what is happening away from Brussels. We must remember every day what is going here and this is thanks to the commitment of the people who are involved in entities such as the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, who are committed to support people. You are Roma people, you are Europeans like all of us ”.
