We join the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust 2026 [editar]

On the occasion of the 2026 International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) would like to remember, once again, the millions of people murdered by the Nazi regime and pay special tribute to the Roma people, who were also victims of genocide (known as the Porrajmos or Samudaripen) during the Second World War.

On this date, established by the United Nations to keep historical memory alive and promote the values of human dignity, justice and human rights, FSG emphasises the importance of recognising all the persecutions suffered under Nazism. Among them, that of the Roma people, who were subjected to deportations, internments and systematic murders on the basis of race and hatred.

27 January 2026 marks the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau. More than a million people were murdered there.

At Fundación Secretariado Gitano, we reaffirm our commitment to education, remembrance and the fight against antigypsyism, anti-Semitism and all forms of racism and discrimination. Remembering the Holocaust is, today more than ever, a collective responsibility to prevent similar events from happening again and to build a society based on respect, equality and coexistence.

The theme ‘Holocaust Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights’ will guide the United Nations' Holocaust remembrance and education activities in 2026. As the UN points out, ‘remembrance dignifies the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. It keeps alive their memories of the communities and traditions and loved ones the Nazis sought to erase.’

• 27 January. State ceremony to mark the ‘Official Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Prevention of Crimes against Humanity’. Spanish Senate.
• 29 January. Ceremony: Memory, Justice and the Present: The Reality of the Roma Today. Commemorative gathering for the Roma victims of the Nazi Holocaust. Organised by Intermón Oxfam and Fundación Secretariado Gitano - Cataluña.
