On January 8th, Her Majesty the Queen of Spain Doña Letizia received on hearing Fundación Secretariado Gitano to have a better knowing of the objectives and the activities of our entity, which work was distinguished with the Princess of Girona 2015 prize.

On 8th of January 2016, Her Majesty the Queen Doña Letizia received a delegation of Fundación Secretariado Gitano on hearing at Palacio de la Zarzuela to have a better knowing of the objectives and activities of our entity, which work was distinguished with the Princess of Girona 2015 prize.

Twelve representatives of the FSG delegation assisted to the hearing of the Queen Dª Letizia. They represented different ambits of the FSG: board of trustees, direction, central coordination and other territories technical team as well as two young Roma participants in our programs.

After the oficial picture, the president of FSG, Pedro Puente Fernández, thanked Doña Letizia for this hearing and the opportunity it gives to transmit to the Royal House our work in favor of the social inclusion and the equal opportunities of the Roma community, he also presented the members of the delegation to Her Majesty.

Following, Isidro Rodríguez, general director, briefly explained to the Queen our most recent activities in employment, education, childhood support, and fighting discrimination as well as social sensitizing making special emphasis in our compromise with the education of the Roma children. FSG director exposed to Her Majesty the serious problem of the early school dropout of the Roma young. For that reason, Rodríguez explained to the Queen, our priority is to make efforts and support the students and their families to get more and more young Roma finish their compulsory education.

At this moment of the hearing, two young Roma were presented to the Queen, representatives of the program “Roma Ambassadors for the education”, a group of trained young Roma which aim to support and act as role model for other Roma youngsters and their families to complete their compulsory secondary education. This initiative, started some months ago by FSG to support the different programs and education campaigns and that we wanted to share with Her Majesty, aims to show to the society this unknown aspect.

Dª Letizia wanted to know about the situation of the Roma women, the advances made in their personal promotion both educative and professional as well as the role they are playing as motor for the inclusion within her community and in the whole society. Lastly, the Queen asked about the progress made in the social image of the Roma community as in the media as in the institutional public spaces.

This is not the first time that Dª Letizia receives FSG on hearing. On 2008, when being Princess of Asturias, she received the FSG board of trustees.

From FSG, we want to thank the Royal House for its support and recognizing our work and efforts to better the living conditions, fighting discrimination and making real the full citizenship of the Roma community.
