Fundación Secretariado Gitano celebrates its 21st Annual Institutional Meeting in Cuenca [editar]
Between 12 and 14 November, more than 150 people from the central, regional and local teams of the 15 Spanish regions where the Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) is established, as well as members of the Board of Trustees, gathered together. This year, the Annual Institutional Meeting was held in the city of Cuenca.
The backdrop to this 21st Meeting was the celebration of 600 years of the Roma people's presence on the Iberian Peninsula and the government's declaration of 2025 as the Year of the Roma People in Spain.
Sara Giménez, director general of the FSG, gave a welcome speech mentioning this relevant topic: ‘in this celebration, we were clear from the outset about the need for the involvement of all state institutions. It is a year to celebrate and the summary is good. But we must continue working to close all the gaps of inequality that remain.’
In addition, José Manuel Caballero, second vice-president of the Regional Government of Castile-La Mancha, stressed that ‘the Roma, their cultural, social and economic importance, are not sufficiently known. This 600th anniversary must serve to raise awareness of them.’ Darío Dolz, mayor of Cuenca, the city hosting the meeting, also spoke at the opening ceremony.
During the working sessions of the meeting, a review was made of a year full of activity promoted by the various offices of the FSG, as well as an evaluation of the objectives achieved, and work was done on specific proposals that will mark the organisation's advocacy action. Of particular relevance is the proposal to move forward with the approval of a Comprehensive Law for the recognition, equality and promotion of the Roma, which will provide a framework for action by the public authorities.
The decision to hold the 2025 Meeting in Cuenca, hosted by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano Castilla - La Mancha, is in line with the objective of holding these Meetings in the different territories where the entity carries out its work. Some of the previous editions have taken place in Gijón (2024), Valencia (2023), Málaga (2022) and Santiago de Compostela (2021).
This meeting was sponsored by the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha and co-financed within the framework of the European Social Fund Plus programmes developed by the FSG at the national level, with the collaboration of the Cuenca City Council, the Paleontological Museum (MUPA), which hosted the conference, and the technology company Teknoservice TTL.
