EU Roma Week 2018 at the European Parliament [editar]
It commemorates the 47th anniversary of the Romani Union London meeting in 1971 in which eminent Roma established the bases of the Roma political movement and established symbols such as the Roma flag or the anthem “Gelem Gelem”.
One more year, coinciding with 8 April International Roma Day, the European Parliament led by the ARDI intergroup organizes the Roma Week. This third edition will take place in Brussels from 8 to 12 April with a variety of events, presentations, debates and exhibitions in which politicians, activists, representatives of civil society and the Roma community participate. Fundación Secretariado Gitano is co-organizer of the event and will have a large participation of six representatives who will put their voice in the different events that take place.
Roma Week 2018 aims to take advantage of the work done in the two previous editions of this event. One of the key topics will be the historic report that the European Parliament adopted in October 2017 “Fundamental Rights Aspects in Roma Integration in the EU: Fighting AntiGypsyism" which urges the European Commission and the Member States of the EU to fight against antiGypsyism. There will be debates around this topic. FSG will be participating as a exert in a pannel Ethnic profiling in police identification, a topic in which the Equality of Treatment and Non-Discrimination Department conducts training for key stakeholders (police members, prosecutors, lawyers ...).
Another key topic will be the mid-term evaluation of the European framework for Roma Inclusion. Both the evaluation and the proposal of mechanisms for the improvement for the period up to 2020 and post 2020. In this context of activities, the FSG will be presenting the Roma Civil Monitor project. This project coordinated by CEU, FSG, ERGO and ERRC involves up to 90 NGOs from 27 countries throughout Europe. The objective is to capacitate these organizations by training in political monitoring and advocacy so they are able to produce annual reports on the implementation of the National Strategies on Roma inclusion, the so-called "shadow reports".
In addition, the Roma Week offer activities as exhibitions, youth meetings, film screenings, breakfast with MEPs...
