Campaign against the digital divide

A campaign on the digital divide

The ‘Welcome to Digital TransfoROMAtion’ campaign focuses on the digital divide affecting the Roma. Part of the ‘Actualiza_Tec. Digital equality for the Roma community’ project, it was carried out in 2023 and involved the digitisation of many of the services provided by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, the creation of digital classrooms throughout Spain, raising social awareness of the digital divide, and various communication initiatives. The digital divide manifests itself in two ways: a lack of equipment and a lack of digital skills. The campaign made it possible to disseminate some of the data that highlights the depth of the divide between Roma families and society as a whole:

  • Internet access: 93.9% for society as a whole, 79.4% for Roma families
  • Households with internet connection: 95.9% for society as a whole and only 78% for Roma families.
  • Computers per pupil: 1 computer for every 7 children in schools where the majority of pupils are Roma, compared to 1 for every 3 in other schools.

A trompe l'oeil gap

To raise awareness of the digital divide, the campaign used a trompe l'oeil canvas that simulated a crack in the ground as a metaphor for the effects of the digital divide. The canvas was manufactured and travelled to different cities where the project was presented. It was also used to create several videos to raise awareness and communicate the project.

Closing the gap

Since 2022 Fundación Secretariado Gitano has had a roadmap for digitalisation and for mitigating the effects of digitalisation among the most vulnerable people. This strategy is part of the policy promoting digital transformation in Spain and the European Union which, among other aspects, aims to ensure that by 2026, 80% of people in Spain have acquired basic digital skills and that a humanistic and inclusive transformation process is implemented.

The Actualíza_TEC project is funded through the call for grants for the modernisation of the Third Sector 2023 by the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, financed by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the NextGeneration EU Funds of the European Union.
