Not back to school [editar]
Campaign against school failure among Roma pupils
School failure and dropout
Two out of three Roma girls and boys leave school without completing secondary education. Failure, dropout rates and school segregation are undermining the future of thousands of young people. Most Roma children enter the education system late. Their educational trajectory is marked by failure and repeating years: by the age of 11, 40% have already repeated a year. Without sufficient support, without educational role models, in segregated schools and mostly living in poverty, they drop out of school around the age of 16 without having obtained their secondary school certificate
The campaign
The "Not back to school" campaign reminds us that when September rolls around, numerous brands and businesses join in on the back-to-school hype with choreographed dances, adverts and songs. However, many children do not live in this musical world. "Not back to school" breaks with this advertising fiction by showing that, for many Roma girls and boys, this return to school, which is fraught with barriers, is far removed from the clichés portrayed in advertising. That is why Fundación Secretariado Gitano is launching a commercial to raise awareness of the situation faced by Roma students.
What do we ask of the public authorities?
With this campaign, we call on the education authorities to:
- Develop a specific guidance and educational support plan for Roma students.
- Implement measures to guarantee free access to early childhood education for Roma children.
- Reverse the school segregation that affects one in three Roma children.
