As a result of the work carried out by the partners of the European project NET KARD during 2013, the reports on the situation of discrimination against the Roma community in the participating countries—Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Romania—have just been published in English.
These reports also provide detailed information on the legal instruments available in each country to combat discrimination and, most notably, an analysis of the current barriers to the effective protection of the rights of Roma men and women in these countries. In addition, they include recommendations for improving the protection of victims and examples of good practices in this field.
The report on Spain was prepared by Sara Giménez, Head of the Equal Treatment Department, and Javier Sáez, Territorial Coordinator, both staff members of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, the organization leading the project.
From an integrated perspective, the main objective of the NET KARD project is to provide resources to key professionals involved in preventing discrimination against Roma people, as well as to promote the establishment of networks and working methodologies among key actors in the fight against discrimination and in supporting victims—namely, legal professionals, police services, Roma associations, and media practitioners.
