The event took place in Rome (Italy) and it was organised by Associazione 21 luglio, coordinator of the Roma Civil Monitor Project in Italy and the Central European University (CEU) and promoted by Senator Francesco Verducci.

This international event took place in one of the halls of the Senate of the Republic of Italy, and aimed to address the lack of official data on the living conditions of Roma populations in Europe. This situation has been a constant concern for the Fundamental Rights Agency of Europe (FRA) as this lack of data and information results in the impossibility to plan effective interventions, monitor their results, allocate resources in a targeted manner and effectively combat stereotypes and discrimination.

At the event we were able to share different effective methodologies for obtaining data on the situation of the Roma population in areas such as health, education, poverty and housing. Representatives from Italy, Czech Republic and Slovakia took part in the event, as well as the participation of Fundación Secretariado Gitano.

In our intervention we had the opportunity to briefly explain our methodology for obtaining data, what our role is before, during and after this research work, and finally how we use the information obtained to improve our programmes. This data collection work is essential to be able to define the impact, needs and actions that we carry out from the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, as well as a key element when it comes to dialogue with political actors when analysing the need to create or modify public policies due to their limited impact on the Roma population.

As part of the event, the official presentation of the report ‘Under the Lens’, produced by the event organiser Associazione 21 luglio, took place. This report carries out an in-depth research comparing the methodologies used in Europe to collect and process statistical data concerning Roma and Sinti communities, with a specific focus on Italy.
