In recent weeks, the Fundación Secretariado Gitano has participated in two important international conferences in Vienna and Berlin, invited because of the track record and results of the Acceder programme, which has been promoting employment and training for the Roma population in Spain for 25 years.

On 16 October, we attended the 1st International Conference of the Danube Labour Market Policy Platform for Roma Inclusion, under the slogan ‘Roma Empowerment for the Common Labour Market. 20 Years of Successful Project Implementation in the Danube Region’. The meeting addressed key issues on labour policies for the inclusion of vulnerable groups, such as the Roma community, especially in view of the current challenges in the Danube region.

We shared the panel with representatives from the European Commission, ERGO Network, the Advisory Council of the Roma Ethnic Group in Austria, the University of Vienna and the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, among others.

On 14 November, we participated in the international conference ‘#Talent4Tomorrow: Securing Skilled Labour in Europe’, organised by the Berlin Senate Department for Labour, Social Services, Gender Equality, Integration, Diversity and Anti-Discrimination. This event focused on topics such as employment potential, people-centred artificial intelligence, skilled labour immigration and the importance of decent work and training to ensure a skilled workforce. We took part in a session on how to better include people with low formal qualifications into the labour market, alongside representatives from institutions in Lithuania, Austria and Germany.

At both conferences, we were able to present the history and impact of the Acceder programme in Spain, highlighting the keys to its success: a explicit (but not exclusive) focus on Roma, a long-term vision, close collaboration with companies, the organisation of tailored training and a comprehensive approach. All this with the support of the European Social Fund+.
