The underlying theme is dedicated to the celebration of the 600th anniversary of the Roma people's presence on the Iberian Peninsula.

The Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) today presented its 21st Annual Report on ‘Discrimination and the Roma Community’ in Seville. The report has become an essential tool for highlighting and analysing the situation of discrimination and anti-Roma sentiment that the Roma community still suffers in our country.

The report was presented at an event opened by Sara Giménez, Director General of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, Beatriz Carrillo, Director General of Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination and Against Racism at the Ministry of Equality, and Ana Vanessa García, Secretary General for Social Inclusion at the Regional Government of Andalusia. Ana Redondo, Minister for Equality, joined the event with a video message, highlighting the importance of this type of report in advancing the fight against anti-Roma discrimination

Areas of discrimination

The report documents 399 cases of discrimination against Roma people that the FSG has dealt with and supported in 2024 (48 cases involving the media, 118 cases of hate speech on social media, 82 cases involving access to goods and services, 25 cases in education, 35 cases in employment, 15 cases in health services, 19 cases in police services, 45 cases in housing and 12 cases in other areas). Thirty-one of these cases are intersectional in nature, as they involve situations where different grounds for discrimination converge, such as being discriminated against for being a woman and a Roma. Raising awareness and improving the situation of Roma women is a key element for the FSG.

The report also includes the 20 lawsuits that the FSG had pending in court in 2024, a key aspect of its work in defending rights, supporting victims and recognising good practices in the fight against discrimination and anti-Gypsyism.

The 600th anniversary of the presence of the Roma on the Iberian Peninsula, the focus of the report

This year, the report takes on special significance as it coincides with the celebration of 600 years of the presence of the Roma people on the Iberian Peninsula. For this reason, the In Depth section is dedicated precisely to this anniversary, with articles by prominent authors who assess, from different perspectives, the contribution of the Roma people to Spanish history and culture, and also recognise the past discrimination and persecution suffered by the Roma people and its impact on the present day.

During the event, two Roma women who have been victims of discrimination presented their cases and the support offered by the FSG through the IgualTrato programme, which, since 2024, has had a team of 11 Roma lawyers specialising in assisting victims of anti-Roma discrimination who seek advice and support from the foundation. This programme is funded by the European Social Fund Plus and the 0.7% programme for Activities of Social Interest of the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030.

The english version of this report will be available very soon.
