On 19 and 20 May, Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) held two conferences at its headquarters in Madrid focusing on the health, well-being and social equity of Roma youth, as part of the Romanó Sastipén programme and funded by the Government Delegation for the National Plan on Drugs.

The event brought together professionals, social organisations, technical staff and specialists from various fields with the aim of analysing the main health trends affecting young Roma and sharing tools and strategies for social and preventive intervention.

The technical conference on 19 May, entitled “Evidence for equity: developments and trends in the health of young Roma”, served to present the progress and findings of the FSG Health Observatory, an initiative which, since 2014, has been analysing indicators related to health, inequality and young Roma.

The institutional opening featured a speech by Xisca Sureda Llull, Government Delegate for the National Plan on Drugs, who highlighted the importance of continuing to promote public policies and preventive measures tailored to the social reality of young Roma. FSG particularly highlighted her approachability, knowledge and sensitivity towards the issues addressed during the conference, as well as her commitment to the need to work using comprehensive, evidence-based approaches.

During this first session, issues such as adolescent health in contexts of inequality, the historical evolution of the Observatory’s indicators and the identification of emerging challenges for public policy and social intervention were addressed.

The training session on 20 May, entitled “Health trends and key approaches to working with Roma youth”, was practical and specialised in nature, focusing on topics such as addiction prevention, discrimination and its impact on health, adolescent mental health, and the influence of the digital environment.

The speakers shared analyses, experiences and practical tools to strengthen social intervention with Roma youth from a preventive, community-based and intercultural perspective, whilst also creating spaces for dialogue and joint reflection among participating organisations and professionals.

Both sessions concluded with participatory spaces for collective reflection and the sharing of lessons learnt and challenges, reinforcing the importance of generating coordinated and effective responses to the inequalities affecting young Roma.

Through these initiatives, Fundación Secretariado Gitano continues to reinforce its commitment to promoting health, prevention and equal opportunities, positioning the participation and well-being of young Roma as key elements in moving towards a fairer and more inclusive society.
