On the occasion of the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the European Network Against Racism (ENAR) published its Shadow Report 2011-2012 Racism in Europe, which compiles evidence of racial discrimination and racist incidents collected by its member organisations, including the FSG.
ENAR's Shadow Reports are produced yearly to fill the gaps in the official and academic data by providing alternative evidence, and to offer an NGO perspective on the realities of racism in the EU and its Member States.
On this occasion, the European Shadow Report synthesises data from country-specific shadow reports on 26 Member States. The FSG played an active role in the Shadow Report focusing on the Spanish case.
The Report, launched on the 20th of March, puts a particular emphasis on islamophobia but analyses the situation of other groups such as the Roma community, which it identifies as being among those most vulnerable to discrimination on grounds of race and/or ethnicity along with Muslim and sub-Saharian immigrants. The report underlines in particular the persistent educational segregation of Roma children in several Member States.
The ENAR's Shadow Report affirms, furthermore, that in spite of the adoption of National Roma Integration Strategies in almost all Member States, their implementation is inadequate at best.
