FSG commemorates International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2013Communiqué of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano

On the 21st of March 1960, the South African police killed several people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid (segregation between white and black people). A few years later, the United Nations decided to recognise this day as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

On a day like today, we have to reflect on a fundamental right such as equality, recognised in numerous national and international legal instruments. Nonetheless, unfortunately not all people, including many Roma, enjoy it in practice.

We underline at the European level the EU Directive 2000/43/CE, which continues to require a proper transposition in Spanish law thirteen years after its adoption, in order to drive real and effective, de facto equality, and to give proper means and autonomy to Spain’s State Council for the Promotion of Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination on Grounds of Race and Ethnicity with a view to ensuring the protection of the victims of racial and ethnic discrimination, as established by the Directive.

Currently, we find multiple demonstrations that racism and the xenophobia are not eradicated in Spain and beyond. Therefore, on the Day against Racism, we want to highlight that the Roma community is one of the social groups that experience the greatest degree of rejection and negative stereotypes in Spanish society. Furthermore, intolerable events take place at European level, like mass expulsions of Roma EU citizens in countries like France and Italy, along with despicable cases of anti-Roma violence in Hungary and other countries.

From the Fundación Secretariado Gitano we condemn any event, act or expression of racism or xenophobia. On the occasion of the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we request major efforts on the part of society as a whole and of the public powers to end the social stigma of racism and discrimination, in order to build together a society built on equality as one of its most relevant democratic principles.
