‘For the Roma of Castile and León’, Carlos Fernández Herrera (1996) was sworn in on 11 March as a member of the Socialist Parliamentary Group in Zamora in the Parliament of Castile and León.
Carlos Fernández was already a member of the Parliament between November 2020 and February 2022, being the first and only Roma member in Castilla y León. ‘It is an honour and an enormous responsibility to once again represent a silenced minority, my people, vindicating and bringing the voice of the Roma to such an important and necessary space of representation,’ says Fernández.
Carlos Fernández has a degree in Art History from the University of Salamanca, is studying for a doctorate in Art History at the same university and has been coordinator of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano in Zamora since September 2024. He is also the youngest member of the Chamber of Deputies: ‘It is an opportunity for the voice of youth to reach the Parliament and even more so as I am from Zamora, a city that is left empty and without youth’.
The FSG would like to congratulate him and wish him the best of luck in this new leap into politics, in view of the need for more and more Roma to join political parties and institutions with equal opportunities.
