Fundación Secretariado Gitano launches a new edition of the youth employment programme Learning by Doing

Fundación Secretariado Gitano is launching 11 new Learning by Doing courses that will enable 220 young people under the age of 30 to follow a training pathway in collaboration with companies from different sectors.

The twelfth edition of Learning by Doing starts simultaneously in 11 Spanish cities. A total of 220 young people from these cities are beginning a training pathway that will last 6 months. Throughout this time, they will be accompanied by an FSG tutor with whom they will work on developing their personal and professional skills. In addition, they will receive theoretical training alternating with practical training in the different jobs through which they will rotate.

Major companies such as Carrefour, Leroy Merlin and Ikea, among others, will once again collaborate with Fundación Secretariado Gitano in training for employment of young Roma who are not working and are outside the education system. These companies have become involved with the dual training model of Learning by Doing, which involves collaborating in the selection of students, in the programming of the content of the training pathway, in the teaching of theoretical training and in the tutoring of practical training.

In its 11 years of operation, Learning by Doing has reached 3 544 young people in 41 different cities. The impact that this initiative has had on the lives of the young people who have participated, on their families and on the 66 companies that have collaborated, is shown in the following results:

  • 55% of the students have been hired,
  • 32% of the students have returned to the education system,
  • 87% of the young participants affirm that their lives have improved,
  • 94% of companies would be willing to collaborate again with Learning by Doing.

Thanks to funding from the European Social Fund within the framework of the Youth Employment Programme and co-funding from the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation and the Public Employment Service of Castile and León, we will be able to develop this new edition in 2025.

Fundación Secretariado Gitano will continue to promote measures aimed at the labour market inclusion of the Roma in general, and of young people in particular. These measures have the potential to improve people's lives, but they require the collaboration of social organisations, public administrations, private organisations and companies.
