Study visit of the FSG’s Calí Programme to Prolepsis in Athens

Professionals of the Cali team: For the equality of Roma women visit the health prevention programme of Prolepsis in Athens.

Last 12 and 13 December, professionals from Fundación Secretariado Gitano’s Calí programme participated in a study visit to the Greek NGO Prolepsis (www.prolepsis.gr) with the aim of learning about their work and exchanging methodologies of intervention in the field of health with Roma women in situations of extreme vulnerability and assessing possible future collaboration actions.

On this occasion, in addition to meeting with the professionals of the organization, we were able to visit the Spata settlement, near the city of Athens, where 50 Roma families live segregated and without access to running water, electricity or sewage. We also had the opportunity to meet with professionals from the Spata socio-health centre where we were presented with the resources available to the local population and exchanged views on the challenges to be faced and the strategies put in place to address them.

It is estimated that the Roma population of Roma in Greece is around 250 000 people and constitutes about 2.5% of the total population. A significant part of this population continues to live in segregated settlements.
