FSG Voluntariado
From Fundación Secretariado Gitano, we join in the celebration of the 2024 International Volunteer Day.
On 5 December we celebrate International Volunteer Day, a day to recognize the immense value of those who dedicate their time, knowledge and commitment to build a more just and caring society.
Volunteering has proven, once again, to be an essential pillar in responding to the various crises we face in society, such as this year 2024, marked by challenges such as those caused by the terrible floods in Valencia. Thousands of people, including many Roma, are mobilizing to alleviate suffering and rebuild hope. Their work not only offers immediate help, but also demonstrates the transformative power of solidarity in the most difficult moments.
From Fundación Secretariado Gitano, we are proud to have a fantastic team of volunteers, Roma and non-Roma, who demonstrate their solidarity in favor of the progress of the Roma people. Currently, more than 500 volunteers are part of this great family, consolidating a model of participation that reinforces our mission and strengthens the scope of each of our programmes and initiatives.
Next year we celebrate the 600th anniversary of the presence of the Roma people in the Iberian Peninsula. We will commemorate and honor a testimony of resilience, diversity, richness and cultural contribution. Throughout these centuries, the Roma People have contributed tirelessly to the development of society, and volunteering is a key tool to make this contribution visible. We invite all citizens to participate in the commemorative activities that we will organize, reflecting on how individual commitment can transform the social fabric and promote intercultural coexistence.
Volunteering is universal and diverse: each person brings something unique, whether it is time, experience or knowledge. However, all volunteers share fundamental values such as empathy, social responsibility and the motivation to improve the lives of those most in need. Their work complements what public policies do not always achieve, reaching places and people that would otherwise be neglected.
Today more than ever, we make a call to action. In a context where vulnerability can arise at any time, it is the responsibility of all of us to join forces to build a more equitable future. Volunteering not only transforms lives, but also transforms us individually, generating spaces of intercultural coexistence based on respect and equity.
We want to thank the volunteers of the FSG, because with the sum of their effort and dedication, they contribute to achieve our mission and, ultimately, to fight for the inclusion, equality and development of the Roma People.
