More than 320 Roma children from all over Spain have participated in the ‘Esto va de derechos’ (This is about rights) initiative, launched by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) in collaboration with the Platform of Children's Organisations.

This process, which has lasted around 2 months, has culminated in the commemoration of the Universal Day of Children's Rights. The Minister for Youth and Children, Sira Rego, took part in this event to respond to the concerns of the boys and girls. Among them were a group of FSG’s participants in Madrid, who presented the conclusions on the right to non-discrimination and gender equality worked on throughout the process. Among their requests, they included advertising without stereotypes, promoting listening to children and adolescents and including them as part of the change.

When asked about the 600th anniversary in 2025 of the arrival of the Roma to the Iberian Peninsula, and about possible measures to promote the introduction of Roma history and culture in the educational curricula in Spain, the minister commented: ‘I want to acknowledge the work being done by Fundación Secretariado Gitano. There is an outstanding debt and I want you to know that, although the curricular itinerary does not depend on the Ministry of Youth and Children, I am committed to passing it on, as I have already done on other occasions, to the Ministry of Education and the autonomous communities. It could be an interesting issue to work on given the need we all have to include in the curriculum the entire history of the Roma population, a history that is part of everyone and should be also part of the educational space of the whole country’.

Fundación Secretariado Gitano stresses the need to continue promoting spaces where children and adolescents can express their proposals so that public authorities can integrate them into policies and eradicate inequalities.

These activities form part of the State Programme for the Promotion of Roma Participation, financed by the State Programmes for Activities of General Interest considered to be of social interest, corresponding to the Secretary of State for Social Rights.
