On 4 and 5 November, Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) brought together more than 100 young participants in the eleven training and employment modalities developed in the second edition of the TándEM programme in 23 cities.
TándEM is a training programme in alternation with employment aimed at unemployed young people under 30 years of age, the purpose of which is to provide them with professional training and facilitate their integration into the labour market. A programme of the State Public Employment Service (financed by Next Generation funds) which, in this case, and through a collaboration agreement with the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, is specifically aimed at Roma youth.
As part of public employment policies, this initiative ensures the participation of young Roma, offering them real opportunities for training and employment. In its first edition (2022-2023), the programme succeeded in getting 68% of the students into the labour market and 13% will continue studying. A success rate that demonstrates the value of initiatives such as this, which guarantee equal opportunities for Roma youth and show that training and employment are key to improving the future of young Roma.
More than 100 young people have been trained in one of the eleven specialities offered by this II Edition of the programme: Assembly and maintenance of renewable energy installations-photovoltaic; Restaurant and catering service; Maintenance and landscaping of green areas; Maintenance and repair of public buildings; Energy efficiency in the rehabilitation of buildings; Community promotion of health and gender equality; Communication in digital environments; and Administrative in NGOs.
Sara Giménez, director general of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, highlighted during the closing ceremony the SEPE's commitment with Roma youth by establishing a specific line of collaboration with the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, which is materialised with the launch of a third edition of TándEM 2024-2025. ‘This training and employment stage is an opportunity for social and labour inclusion for a new generation of Roma, who want the same autonomy and equal work opportunities to achieve a better future’. Giménez addressed them as a model of young people who are training and moving forward. ‘Each and every one of you is a point of reference for other young Roma’.
Gerardo Gutiérrez, Director General of SEPE, took part in this event to learn first-hand about the experience of the young Roma participants in this second edition of the TándEM programme, their learning and the impact it has had on their lives and their immediate environment. Gerardo Gutiérrez wanted to share a more informal conversation with the young people and tasted the menu prepared by some of the catering student-workers in collaboration with the FSG's El Fogón Errante insertion company in Navarra.
In addition to Gerardo Gutiérrez, Director General of SEPE, the session was attended by representatives of the large companies that have played an active part in the development of the programme, such as: Juan Manuel Cruz, Global Director of Industrial Relations and Labour Consultancy at Acciona; María Sánchez-Harguindey Recouso, Director of Recruitment Spain at Eulen Servicios; Lucía Muñoz Moro, Head of Climate Action and Analysis at Iberdrola, within the framework of the ‘Generation Unlimited’ UNICEF Spain Alliance and Jorge Uribe, Product Manager for the Public Sector at Adecco.
