On Europe Day, we present our proposals for the European Elections 2024 for a stronger social Europe in times of crisis [editar]

The European legislature 2019-2024 has been very intense, full of unexpected challenges and marked by several crises, including the war conflicts at the borders of Europe, which has conditioned the economic and social policies of the EU. We hope that in the next 5 years of the European legislature there will be a firm commitment to strengthen social Europe, promoting the achievement of the goals set out in the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan, a roadmap for progress in equality and social cohesion.

We hope that this will be a period of change in which Roma throughout Europe will improve their living conditions compared to the current situation. To this end, Fundación Secretariado Gitano urges European political parties to recognise the situation of extreme poverty, exclusion and discrimination suffered by Roma people throughout the EU and to commit themselves with determination to overcome the existing inequalities and the violation of human rights suffered by some Roma people. In short, to guarantee the equal rights of Roma as full citizens of the EU.

In the current European political context of increasing racist and xenophobic discourses, it is necessary to maintain firm positions to counteract these approaches and to carry out political proposals that guarantee the founding values of the EU and the construction of a European Union for all people.

As a priority, we believe that the European institutions should promote the following 10 measures and initiatives:

1. To explicitly include objectives and targets for the reduction of the Roma inequality gap (mainly in terms of education and substandard housing) in the framework of the European Semester.
2. To turn the European Education Area into a useful instrument to address the educational inequality and guarantee the school success of Roma children in the EU.
3. To approve an EU Action Plan to eradicate Roma settlements by 2030 requested by the European Parliament.
4. To ensure that the European Child Guarantee effectively reaches the most vulnerable Roma children in Europe.
5. To adopt an EU Directive on adequate Minimum Income for the most disadvantaged groups living in extreme poverty, including the Roma population in Europe.
6. To ensure that the Roma population, and particularly young people, benefits from the opportunities offered by new and future green and digital jobs.
7. To focus investments that guarantee equal opportunities for Roma women, mainly those who are in a more vulnerable situation.
8. To address Roma cohesion and equal social and economic rights by all EU financial instruments.
9. To design the future cohesion policy, to be decided in the coming years, to continue taking on board the need to focus its investments on the most disadvantaged groups, such as the Roma.
10. To promote the figure of a coordinator for combating discrimination and antigypsyism against Roma in THE EU.
