During the visit, the minister showed interest in learning about the situation of Roma children and youth, and the programmes and actions developed by the FSG

Sira Rego, Minister for Youth and Children, visited the headquarters of Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) in Madrid on Tuesday 19 March to learn about the different Education, Social Inclusion, Childhood and Participation programmes.

During the meeting, Sira Rego was able to learn more about the situation of Roma children and youth. Sara Giménez, Director General of FSG, shared with her the data on child poverty (89%), school failure (63%), the impact of school segregation and the reality of children living in settlements, as well as the difficulties of young people in accessing employment due to their low level of education. This is the context of childhood and youth to which FSG responds with the Promociona, CaixaProInfancia and I+I programmes, among others. During the visit, she was able to see first-hand the objectives set by FSG and meet some groups of participants of different ages, from 6 to 16 years old.

The minister addressed the Roma youth to encourage them to continue their studies and take advantage of the different ways to participate in society, in addition to the programmes developed by FSG. She also mentioned that this term of office will see the launch of the first Youth Law, expressing her willingness to involve Roma youth in the drafting process with their proposals.

After learning about the context and the different programmes aimed at Roma children and youth, Sira Rego told Sara Giménez, Director General of FSG, of her willingness to collaborate actively with the Roma population.
