Winners of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano Awards 2023 announced [editar]
The FSG Awards highlight the work of people, entities or institutions that promote progress in social inclusion and equal opportunities for the Roma people.
A jury external to the Fundación Secretariado Gitano has been in charge of deciding this edition of the awards, at a meeting held on 23 January in Madrid. The jury was made up of Lucía Muñoz, Head of Climate Action and Analysis, Climate Change and Alliances Area of Iberdrola; César González, Information Director of La Sexta; Natalia Peiró, Secretary General of Cáritas Spain; Mayte Ortiz, Director of the Fundación SM; José Mercé, flamenco artist and Antonio Soto, Vice-President of Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG).
Jury of the FSG 2023 Awards
The Fundación Secretariado Gitano Awards recognise the social, cultural or human work of individuals, work teams, entities or institutions at a national or international level related to the advancement of social inclusion and equality of Roma people, in line with the values and lines of work promoted by Fundación Secretariado Gitano.
This year's winners in the different categories were:
- “Education is the Future" category: MEP Peter Pollák, for promoting the fight against school segregation of Roma children, leading to a European Parliament resolution that calls to eradicate segregation practices and to implement comprehensive desegregation strategies.
- “Communication with awareness" category: Isaac Rosa, journalist and writer, for being a media loudspeaker for complex social justice causes that particularly affect many Roma people, such as settlements and discrimination in access to housing.
- “Transformative Company" category: Ikea, for its involvement in and promotion of Roma inclusion in the labour market and its real commitment to diversity and social inclusion.
- “Solidarity with G" -individual category: Lola Cabrillana, teacher, writer and influencer, for being a Roma voice that, through literature and social networks, makes Roma culture and values known, breaks stereotypes and denounces inequality and discrimination against Roma people.
- “Solidarity with G" -collective category: The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, for understanding ART and CULTURE in capital letters, recognising the value of diversity, offering a plural cultural proposal that includes Roma culture and its artists, and proactively bringing the Roma community closer to the museum.
- “Pere Giménez Pubill, tío Peret" category: Francisco Suárez Montaño, theatre and performing arts director, for a life and professional career dedicated to the promotion of culture and the performing arts, using his influence to make the situation of the Roma people more visible.
The awards ceremony will take place on 22 February, in a ceremony to be held at the Bertelsmann space in Madrid, at a gala attended by the new president of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, Jesús Loza, and the new general director, Sara Giménez.
At the end of the event, the Fundación Secretariado Gitano would like to pay tribute to the three former Roma deputies in the last legislature: Sara Giménez, Beatriz Carrillo and Ismael Cortés, for their contribution to the defence of Roma rights in the Spanish Congress.
