Fundación Secretariado Gitano receives the visit of the Vice President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas

Margaritis Schinas, Vice President of the European Commission, has visited the headquarters of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) to learn first-hand about the TándEM programme and, specifically, the development of training in Support and maintenance of computer systems and departmental networks.

Margaritis Schinas, has learned about the development of the training and its impact, and has held a meeting with the participating students, young Roma from Albacete, Alicante, Barcelona, Córdoba, Gijón, Huesca, Jaén, Madrid, Mérida, Murcia, Ourense and Valladolid, under 25 years of age.

TándEM is a public training programme in alternation with employment whose purpose is to professionally train and facilitate the insertion of unemployed young people under 30 years of age. TándEM is an initiative of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan with funding from Next Generation - EU.

The TándEM programme currently being developed by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano consists of 4 subprogrammes, which will train a total of 50 young Roma men and women for 12 months (3 months of initial training and 9 months of training alternating with employment). The profile of its participants is that of young people (32% women), in which 40% of the students have no studies and whose origin is from 28 different cities in Spain.

Vice President Schinas has expressed his satisfaction during the visit, highlighting that "this initiative focuses on skills as a vehicle to empower people, offer them opportunities to prosper in life and in society." In addition, and within the framework of the celebration of 2023 as the European Year of Competitions, he highlighted that "programmes such as TándEM, also acquire special relevance to improve the digital literacy of their participants."

On the other hand, the general director of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, Isidro Rodríguez, highlighted the relevance of this visit "because it shows the interest and support of the European Commission for training and employment initiatives for the most vulnerable population and particularly with the Roma youth”.

During the vice president's visit, he was accompanied by the FSG, Isidro Rodríguez, General Director; José Sánchez Deputy General Director of Programmes; Arantza Fernández, Head of Employment and Innovation Department; Ana Segovia, Head of Social Advocacy Department and Belén Sánchez-Rubio, Director of International Department.
