Fundación Secretariado Gitano participates in Portuguese international seminar on plans for the inclusion of the Roma population

On the occasion of the International Roma Day, 8 April, the High Commission for Migration (ACM) in Portugal organised the International Seminar of Local Roma Integration Plans Project, in Lisbon. Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) was invited to this event to share its experience in the inclusion of the Roma population in Spain.

Belén Sánchez-Rubio, director of FSG's international department, and Sara Giménez, president of FSG, member of the Spanish Congress and ECRI (European Commission against Racism and Intolerance), participated in the panel "The importance of strategic planning in social intervention". In their speeches they shared the Spanish experience in policies for Roma inclusion, emphasising the importance of a long-term approach with sufficient resources to ensure success.

In particular, they shared with the Portuguese local entities attending this seminar the experience of more than 20 years of the FSG's Acceder Programme for the employment of Roma people. This programme is committed to the salaried employment of the Roma population as a gateway to social inclusion, and since its launch in 2000 it has accompanied more than 100,000 people in Spain, providing employment to more than 30,000 people.

The seminar was attended by Szabolcs Schmidt (Head of Unit Non-Discrimination: Anti-Racism and Roma Coordination, DG Justice and Consumers (DG JUST), Isabel Almeida Rodrigues (Secretary of State for Equality and Migrations), Sónia Pereira (High Commissioner for Migration), José Reis (Member of the Management Board of the ACM), and Rogério Roque Amaro (Coordinator and Researcher of CEI-ISCTE – Centre for International Studies (ESPP)), among others.
