This December 15th FSG's Learning by Doing programme received the 1st prize of the EESC Civil Society Prize 2022 in the category "Empowering Young People"

The specific objective of the 2022 Civil Society Award is to reward effective, innovative and creative initiatives carried out on the territory of the EU aimed at creating a better future for young people in Europe, addressing their specific needs and contributing to their empowerment and participation in all spheres of economic and social life.

Learning by Doing is a programme that was born in 2013, with the intention of to increase the employability of young Roma people through a training experience in collaboration with leading companies in their sector. The programme tries to give a specific response to the needs of young Roma people, without training or work experience (63% neither study nor work), who dropped out (the early school leaving rate is 64% compared to 19% for the general population), who do not have basic skills (78% without compulsory minimum studies), who face unemployment rates 3 times higher than the rest.

From the point of view of the European Economic and Social Committee, the purpose of this prize, which is awarded on an annual basis, is to reward and promote the initiatives of natural persons (that is, individuals) or private law entities (that is, organizations of civil society) that have contributed significantly to promoting European identity and integration. The general objective of the award is to promote awareness of the contribution that civil society can make to the creation of a European identity and citizenship which, in turn, reinforce the common values on which European integration is based.
