The Fundación Secretariado Gitano celebrates “40 years working for equality”

Over the last 40 years, the organisation’s work has focused on the overall advancement of the Roma community, on the fight against discrimination, and on the vital work of advocacy to include the Roma issues in the political agenda. Among other results of this work, we would highlight the consolidation of three important state-level programmes supported by the European Social Fund: the Acceder Programme (devoted to vocational and employment training), the Promociona Programme (education) and the Calí Programme (equality for Roma women).

On 21 October 1982, the Asociación Secretariado Nacional Gitano was registered with the Ministry of the Interior. In 2001 the Association changed its legal character to that of a foundation, to become what is now known as the Fundación Secretariado Gitano: a state-level NGO, currently with almost one thousand staff (34% Roma) and 400 volunteers.

For this anniversary, a commemorative poster has been designed under the banner “40 years working for equality”, and the image will also be displayed on various items and in different spaces.

The organisation’s forty-year history will also be one of the central topics of the FSG’s next Annual Institutional Meeting, to be held in November in Málaga, and of the Open Days which are being held in this final quarter of 2022 in FSG offices all over Spain.

The Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) is an intercultural social organisation which works for advancement and equal opportunities for the Roma population in Spain and at European level. It delivers programmes and services to defend the rights of Roma people, mainly in the fields of employment, education, health and housing. It also works to promote more active policies for the social inclusion of the Roma population, to fight discrimination, to raise awareness across society and to guarantee equality for all.
