The "Rompe el círculo” (Break the Circle) awards are a series of prizes awarded by the High Commissioner against Child Poverty aimed at recognising good practices in the fight against child poverty and at providing social recognition for these good practices.

The High Commissioner against Child Poverty is a Government body created in 2018, organically dependent on the Presidency, whose main objective is to promote policies and social alliances to make the eradication of child poverty a State objective.

In this first edition of the "Rompe el círculo” (Break the Circle) awards, held on the afternoon of the 14th of June at the Reina Sofía Museum, in Madrid, and broadcasted by RTVE Play, the Promociona programme of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) was awarded under the category of Best Social Initiative, together with the Inspiring Girls Foundation. The award was presented by the deputy Luisa Carcedo, former Minister for Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Welfare and former High Commissioner against Child Poverty.

The award was collected by the president of the FSG, Sara Giménez, who dedicated it to the team of professionals of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano: “We are generating reference families, reference students, in each of the cities where we work”.

Some of the other organisations that received awards at this 1st edition of the "Rompe el círculo” (Break the Circle) Awards, were the CaixaProinfancia programme and the Pau Gasol Foundation, among others.

Promociona Programme in 1 min.

The Promociona programme aims to promote the educational success of Roma students based on the conviction that education is the main tool for Roma youth to break the cycle of poverty and exclusion suffered by the vast majority, and to access a future with more opportunities. The educational levels of Roma youth are below those of the population as a whole, with 64% of Roma students failing to obtain the ESO diploma compared to 13% of the population as a whole.

Since 2009, the FSG has been developing this programme, which is currently implemented in 49 cities in 13 autonomous communities. The programme is addressed to Roma students and their families and it also involves all the agents concerned in the educational process. It has specialised professional profiles (educational counsellors and classroom teachers) and more than 80 Promociona Classrooms for educational reinforcement within the framework of a broader individualised intervention plan.

The programme includes the gender perspective and offers meetings for students and their families, awareness-raising activities, preparation of reports and studies, mentoring activities, etc. From its beginnings until today, the programme has been innovating methodologically, extending to more educational stages and incorporating digitalisation.

An average of 1,500 students and 1,200 families participate in Promociona every year. Specifically, during the 2020-2021 school year, 1,551 children and 1,265 families were involved in collaboration with 483 educational centres. In terms of results, 93% passed the primary school year; 69% passed the secondary school year; 78.4% graduated from secondary school; and of these, 90% continued with post-compulsory studies. The total number of Promociona students who have obtained the ESO diploma (2009-2021) is 1,650.

The Promociona programme has been funded since its beginnings mainly by the European Social Fund and the co-financing of various public administrations. Recently private agents (companies, foundations, etc.) have also joined.

The Promociona programme was awarded in 2016 -in the National Education Awards of the Ministry of Education- under the category of Entities for the promotion of Education.
