Fundación Secretariado Gitano strengthens its commitment to Gender Equality creating an area of Gender Equality and Roma Women
  • Celia Gabarri, who until now was the provincial coordinator of FSG - Palencia and coordinator of the Roma Women's Group (GMG) of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, will be in charge of this new area.

Fundación Secretariado Gitano has always been aware of the situations of discrimination and inequality faced by Roma women. However, 2003 was a turning point in our own activity, when we noticed that Roma women were not getting the same access to training as men in our Acceder employment programme.

From that moment on, and as a response to this observation, the gender and feminist perspective began to make its way into our activity, taking shape in a very active way and as a conditionality in the design of the programmes, in the disaggregated measurement of data and results, and in the development of specific programmes focused on Roma women.

This is reflected in initiatives such as the SARA Romí programme, the “Fundación Secretariado Gitano - Luis-Sáez” scholarships for Roma women at university, the EDYTA programme and the Calí programme for Roma Women's Equality. The FSG's Strategic Plan (2017-2023) also incorporates the gender approach as a cross-cutting objective in all our activities, including our social action and our social and political advocacy.

However, we are aware that incorporating the gender perspective in a transversal way is not enough; for all these reasons, we have set up the Gender Equality and Roma Women area, whose main function is to reinforce our commitment to gender equality and to promote equality and participation amongst Roma women and girls.

It will be led by Celia Gabarri, current coordinator of the organisation's Roma Women's Group (GMG) and, until now, provincial coordinator at FSG - Palencia. Celia is a Roma woman with years of professional experience in our organisation, with a deep knowledge of the Roma community and, especially, of the reality of Roma women; she is a specialist in gender issues.

By creating the area of Gender Equality and Roma Women, we want to promote the following lines of work:

  • Develop a specific line of action for political advocacy that places inequality and discrimination of Roma women and girls on the political agenda.
  • Make visible the prominence, diversity and heterogeneity of Roma women and girls in society.
  • Promote the gender perspective and intersectionality in all our actions.
  • Promote the active participation of the FSG in networks, platforms or specific spaces for gender equality.
  • Promote the participation of Roma women in the defence of their rights.
  • Establish new alliances in the field of gender equality.

We hope that this new area will be built upon egalitarian dialogue, shared reflections and equitable discourses together with passion and commitment for and by Roma women.
