Fundación Secretariado Gitano launches the 10th edition of Learning by Doing

In 2022, eight new Learning by Doing initiatives will be carried out. They will allow 160 people under 30 years old to start a training pathway in collaboration with companies from different sectors.

The 10th edition of Learning by Doing was launched on the 1st of February, with 60 young people starting a 6-month training itinerary to improve their employability. During this time, they will be accompanied by a tutor with whom they will work on the development of their personal and professional skills. In addition, they will receive theoretical and practical training in different positions in a company, through which they will rotate.

Carrefour, Leroy Merlin, Ikea and El Corte Inglés, will once again collaborate with Fundación Secretariado Gitano in the training for employment of young Roma who are not working and who are outside of the education system. These companies have become involved in the dual training model of Learning by Doing, which involves collaborating in the selection of students, in the programming of contents for the training itinerary, in the theoretical training and in the supervision of the practical training.

In these 10 years of operation, in which it has reached 3,544 young people in 41 different cities, this training model has achieved an insertion rate of 55% due to the collaboration of 66 companies. Another of the impacts of Learning by Doing has been the educational return rate: 3 out of 10 young people return to the education system to graduate from secondary school.

The European Social Fund under the Youth Employment Operational Programme 2019-2022 and the co-financing of the La Caixa Foundation will allow us to develop this initiative during 2022 in eight Spanish cities.

The final objective is to improve the skills of the young participants so that they can get into employment and/or return to the education system. We know from our "Study on the situation of the Roma people in Spain in relation to employment and poverty" that in 2018, before the pandemic, the unemployment rate among Roma people under 30 years old was 58% (a figure that more than doubled the rate of the general population at that time). We also know that 63% of young Roma are neither studying nor working.

The joint effort of companies, social organizations and public administrations is necessary to overcome the critical situation of the most vulnerable population.
