FSG Internacional

14th meeting of the European Platform for Roma Inclusion Organized by the European Commission, it was held on September 20th and 21th with the aim of contributing to develop more inclusive national and European Union policies in relation to the Roma community. Fundación Secretariado Gitano opened the session on how to mitigate the negative impact of Covid on the Roma population.

As in each edition, it has been possible to count on a high representation of Political Officers of the European Institutions (European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe and European Economic and Social Committee), Civil Society and NGOs, as well as national government authorities.

From Fundación Secretariado Gitano we have had the opportunity to contribute by opening the session of one of the workshops scheduled on the 20th. Specifically, the one that analyzed possible solutions to mitigate the impact of the Covid pandemic due to unequal access to education and effects of segregation, that was presented by Rafael Saavedra, from the FSG International Department.

This 14th edition of the European Platform has been marked by a high online participation with around 300 participants and by a unanimous feeling of the need to use the financial resources and political instruments available in a more appropriate way. The role of the European Cohesion Policy and the Next Generation funds have been seen as an indispensable tool in order to continue making progress at improving the situation of the Roma population throughout Europe.

The general objectives of the Platform, in line with previous editions, have been:

- Provide space for Member States to declare their renewed commitment to equality, inclusion and participation of Roma, in light of the reformed package proposed by the Commission for the next decade.

- Provide the opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the status of the formulation of national strategic frameworks (National Strategies for the Roma population), specifically regarding their alignment and harmonization with general policies, addressing the main barriers to inclusion and equality, such as racism, discrimination and expressions of anti-Gypsyism, and mitigating the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Roma communities.
