Fundación Secretariado Gitano has participated in the seminar "As Comunidades Ciganas e o Mercado de Trabalho", the closing event of the project "ACEDER - pelo emprego da população cigana", a programme to favour the labour insertion of Roma people in Portugal, inspired by the Acceder programme, which we develop in Spain for 20 years. The Aceder project is an initiative of EAPN Portugal, funded by POISE_3.08 Inserção socioprofissional da comunidade cigana, and has fun from September 2019 to June 2020.
Fundación Secretariado Gitano has collaborated with this project from the beginning, through its Employment and International departments, initially promoting the training of the Portuguese teams, and later participating in awareness raising seminars with representatives of Portuguese companies.
At the project's closing seminar, Isidro Rodríguez, Director of Fundación Secretariado Gitano, made reference to the historic opportunity provided by the new EU Roma strategic framework for equality, inclusion and participation for 2020-2030, in which employment is highlighted as a key element. Furthermore, "the future ESF+ has a specific objective for the Roma population. Portugal, like every Member State, has the opportunity to take advantage of this context to generate a great impact on the lives of many Roma people”. Lastly, he made a calling to the Portuguese government: “We hope that the Portuguese government implements the Acceder programme to offer job opportunities to Roma people”.
Cláudia Pereira, Secretary of State for Integration and Migration, thanked the "Fundación Secretariado Gitano for its inspiring work on the labour insertion of the Roma population" and stressed how "the Portuguese government is committed with reducing inequalities and the Acceder programme is part of that political will".
The project "ACEDER - pelo emprego da população cigana" had among its objectives to to promote the development of individualised pathways of socio-professional insertion through the transmission of basic skills (social, personal, relational and professional) and the definition of life projects. We hope that this programme will continue to support the development of Roma people in Portugal, through employment.
In the video attached it can be seen the testimonies of the project's participants, and how initiatives of this type can impact on the lives of the most vulnerable people.
