Last December 10th we were invited to participate in the pre-sessions of the UPR to Spain, organized at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. The reason for these pre-sessions is to establish a first approach and dialogue between Spanish civil society and the different permanent missions of the member states of the United Nations, with the intention of being able to have a direct knowledge about the human rights situation in Spain.

We had the opportunity to participate in a panel together with other representative entities of the different sectors and groups of Spanish society. Our role was to put on the table the reality of the Roma community in Spain, what are the current conditions in the enjoyment of human rights such as employment, housing, education and cross-cutting issues such as Discrimination, Poverty (with special focus on child poverty) and the gender approach.

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a single mechanism of the Human Rights Council (the Council) of the United Nations that aims to improve the human rights situation on the ground of each of the 193 UN members states.

Under this mechanism, the human rights situation of all UN members states is analysed every 5 years. A total of 42 states are reviewed each year. The result of each review is reflected in a final report that lists the recommendations made by the other member states to the State under review, which will have to be implemented before the next review.

The UPR of Spain will take place on January 22th at the headquarters of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.
