30 July tribute to the Roma victims of the One more year, the Fundación Secretariado Gitano and its Roma Participation Group join the commemoration of the victims of Samudaripen or Porrajmos and La gran Redada (Great Gypsy round-up) at the institutional event that will be held on July 30, convened by the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare, the State Council of the Roma People and the Institute of Roma Culture

The next 30 July 2019 marks 270 years of a historical event that we cannot forget. Today the great social majority is still unknown and what happened on 30 July, 1749 and what it meant for Roma people in Spain. That day there was an attempt to exterminate Roma people known as The Great Raid also known as Roma General Prison. The only reason for their persecution and capture was to be Roma.

195 years later, on the night of 1 August to 2, 1944 more than 3,000 Roma people were massacred at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, as part of the mass annihilation process carried out by Nazism against the Roma population. Samudaripen or Porrajmos are the names given to the attempts of Nazi Germany and Nazi Austria to exterminate most of the Roma peoples of Europe as part of the Holocaust during World War II.

For these reasons, this memorial should not only be a space to recognize those Roma people who lost their lives due to their ethnic status, but also to remind the general public that anti-gypsyism and discrimination against Roma people remain latent in Spain and in Europe, and that we cannot allow certain speeches by ultra-right parties to undermine our goal of becoming an increasingly free, fair and equal society.

The act of commemoration will have the support and presence of the Vice President of the Government and Minister of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Equality in office, Carmen Calvo, and María Luisa Carcedo, Minister of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare in office.
