Head of the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Department at Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) to serve five-year term on Council of Europe's racism monitoring body

Madrid, 12 January 2018.- The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, at the proposal of the Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, has decided to appoint Roma lawyer, Sara Giménez Giménez, as new independent Spanish member of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI).

ECRI is a human rights body of the Council of Europe, composed of independent experts, which monitors problems of racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, intolerance and discrimination on grounds such as “race”, national/ethnic origin, colour, citizenship, religion and language (racial discrimination).

Its members are appointed on the basis of their in-depth knowledge in the field of combating intolerance and, according to its statutes, they should have high moral authority and recognised expertise in dealing with racism, xenophobia, antisemitism and intolerance.

ECRI, one of the international organizations that has repeatedly drawn Member State´s attention to the situation of discrimination against Roma and has called for greater attention by public authorities, will have a Roma person among its members for the next 5 years.

As member of ECRI, Sara Giménez, will now participate in the review of Member States' legislation , policies and other measures to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, antisemitism and intolerance and will issue recommendations with a view to strengthen them and render them more effective.

Sara Giménez holds a Law Degree with a specialization in Human Rights. She has extensive experience in the identification and analysis of cases of racial or ethnic discrimination and has direct experience assisting victims. As Head of the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Department at Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG), she has undertaken the defense of victims in cases of discrimination before the courts, including the European Court of Human Rights.

The Equality Department of FSG provides assistance and support to victims of discrimination and also undertakes strategic litigation in cases of ethnic discrimination and hate crimes.  It also delivers numerous trainings and technical assistance to key agents (lawyers, prosecutors, judiciary, citizen security, administration, media , etc.) and publishes an annual report on "Discrimination and the Roma community".

"I studied Law because it was very clear to me the need to work for the real equality of my people, especially, Roma women. I am now very proud to be part of ECRI because this will allow me to work on the defense of the fundamental right to Equality of all people, and especially of the most vulnerable groups. It is a professional challenge that I take on with responsibility and enthusiasm," said Sara Giménez. From the FSG we celebrate the appointment of Sara Giménez, who has been working with us for over 17 years. It is a recognition to her professional and personal career, which have been marked by the defense of the right to Equality. We are also pleased that the Spanish representation in ECRI has fallen on a Roma woman, which is proof of the support to both gender and ethnic equality. BACK TO MAIN ‘NEWS’ PAGE
