Political participation, equal treatment, gender equality, non-discrimination, the defense of rights or the use of social networks are some of the themes that bring together over 70 young Roma from different parts of Spain at the II Roma Youth Congress organized by Fundación Secretariado Gitano on 24-26 November in Madrid.
Madrid, November 24, 2017.- Law, IT, Journalism, Philosophy, Pedagogy or Architecture are amongst the Degrees represented at this three-day Congress. Young people, as well prepared as others, but invisible as Roma to society. "Many of us have gone unnoticed in our workplaces and study centers because nobody identifies us as Roma and this prevents the Roma and non-Roma communities from knowing each other better and us from putting into value our cultural identity as Roma," says José Antonio Plantón co-coordinator of the programme.
The Congress brings together young active citizens of Roma origin with the objective of promoting the presence of Roma youth in decision-making spaces where issues that directly affect their day-to-day life as citizens are being decided.
Leading companies such as Facebook and Accenture will participate in the event to share with participants strategies and tools to combat discrimination 2.0. In addition, representatives active in the political arena and experts in awareness raising will present their experiences to put the focus of work of the workshops on participation, gender equality or the fight against discrimination.
This Congress is part of the Programme for the Promotion of the Values of Solidarity Tolerance, Participation and Non-Discrimination between Young Roma and Non-Roma funded by the Spanish Institute for Youth (INJUVE).
