Declaration on the recent cases of antigypsyism in EuropeThrough this declaration Fundación Secretariado Gitano wants to publicly show our concern about recent cases of antigypsyism that have occurred in different European countries, particularly in France, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.

In France, there has been a violent attack on a Roma camp with Molotov cocktails and bombs in Marseille (several persons injured) and forced evictions from their homes of several Roma families in Montreuil:

In Czech Republic a summer camp for Roma children was attacked by a person who fired warning shots and shouted anti-Roma verbal abuse:

In Ukraine several Roma families were drivenout of their village (Loshchynivka) with violence, death threats and arson attacks, with no intervention of the police present in the place:

We want to point out three important aspects that are common to all these three cases: the anti-Roma hate component, the lack of an adequate police response, and the lack of public statements condemning such barbaric acts.

We believe that these are very serious cases of antigypsyism, which show that Roma are still victims of collective manifestations of hatred, discrimination and of violence in many European countries that violate their fundamental rights.

We call on the European and national authorities and institutions to address these cases seriously, identify and investigate the perpetrators and fully apply existing anti-discrimination legislation to punish them, as well as to take urgent measures to prevent new cases of antigypsyism in Europe. It is vital to guarantee that Roma victims are protected, defended, and redressed when facing such flagrant violation of their rights.

We urge those with public responsibilities at European and national level to raise their voices against such violation of human rights in Europe.
