FUNDACION SECRETARIADO GITANO (FSG), FUNDACION UNIVERSIDADES Y ENSEÑANZAS SUPERIORES DE CASTILLO Y LEON (FUESCY) AND FUNDACION VILLALAR PROMOTE ACCESS FOR ROMA WOMEN STUDENTS TO POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

The Education Councillor and president of the Fundación Universidades y Enseñanzas Superiores de Castilla y León (FUESCYL), Fernando Rey; the president of the Castilla y León Parliament and the Fundación Villalar, Silvia Clemente; and the president of Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG), Pedro Puente, have signed on June the 13th a protocol which aims to encourage the access for the Roma young girls to postgraduate studies at public universities in Castilla y León. The program is called “Becas Luis Saez - Cada vez más gitanas universitarias”, since the aforementioned painter bequeathed his artistic heritage to sell it and use the money for education and formation scholarships allocated for Roma women.

The Board draws attention to the student diversity, which has been one of its political benchmarks. They adapt and adopt appropriate actions to achieve such purpose. The Education Counselling works in accordance with this reference framework since 2000, when he assumed the competences in the educational area.

In this regard, a protocol has been signed between the Fundación de Universidades y Enseñanzas Superiores de Castilla y León, the Fundación Villalar and the Fundación Secretariado Gitano on June the 13th in the Castilla y León parliament, in Valladolid. Such institutions will promote a program to make young roma girls either initiate or continue their postgraduate studies lending support and orientation to facilitate success in their formation, and thus improving their access to labour market. The project will be called “Becas Luis Saéz - Cada vez más gitanas universitarias”, since the painter left his artistic heritage to sell it and then use the money for scholarships in postgraduate education and formation intended for Roma women.

Thereby, the signatory parties are engaged to conduct actions such as making Roma women arrive to a fairness situation in two ways: between them and the general population on the one hand and with the roma men on the other hand.

Last February, The Fundación Secretariado Gitano received a donation of 284 art treasures –oils, carvings, drawings and sketches – from Javier Saéz, son of the famous painter Luis Saéz. By this donation, he wished the artworks from his father would return to society, and that everything collected form their selling would be invested for the education and formation of Roma women.

The presence of Roma people in Spanish universities is very slight. This under-representation depicts the actual social situation that affects broad layers of the roma community, which is marked by the exclusion, poverty and by the big gap separating them from the rest of the Spanish population.

The Project wants to highlight the situation and open a channel for the educative and professional success of Roma women, promoting its social progress, and in the end serve to as an inspiration and reference for the Roma youthfulness.

The FSG is a non-profit socially intercultural organisation which provides services for the development of the Roma community in Spain and in Europe. It was launched in the 60’s, although it was legally created in 1982.

For its part, the Fundación Villalar Castilla y León is a non-profit cultural entity whose objective is to increase the feeling of belonging of Castilians and citizens form León to this Autonomous Community in the context of its Statute of Autonomy. The foundation also aims to contribute to spread this feeling around the Community, as set out in the article 5.

Famous painter

Luís Sáez Díez (Mazuelo de Muñó, Burgos 1925 - Burgos 2010)  was distinguished in 1991 with the Castilla y León arts prize. He had a brilliant career with    expositions in rooms and art fair at international level and important museums. Now we can contemplate his pieces at the Reina Sofía Art Center in Madrid; Contemporary art museum of Sevilla; Modern Art museum of Bilbao; Art Modern museum of Barcelona; Burgos museum; and Caja Burgos art museum, among others.

This success, accompanied by his talent, came from the hand of a scholarship he was awarded for their studies in the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. This support changed his life and allowed him access to higher education and contact with European culture of the twentieth century, traveling to Paris after studying and performing his first exhibition in Frankfurt. Something that, without this support, would have been unthinkable for a young burgalés of humble origins like him.
