The mission of the FSG is the integral promotion of the Roma community, founded on the respect for its cultural identity
The mission of the FSG is aimed at supporting the equal access of Roma persons to the rights, services and social resources of the rest of the citizenry. In order to do so, it undertakes all kinds of actions aimed at improving the living conditions of Roma persons and at promoting the recognition, support and development of their cultural identity.
The FSG advocates an intercultural society in which Roma persons practice freely and fully their citizenship and contribute to the enrichment of a universal culture. Accordingly, the values that drive its actions are:
- Interculturalism. Support and defend a plural society, by fostering the peaceful cohabitation, mutual recognition and understanding of people from different cultures.
- Solidarity. Reduce socioeconomic inequalities and compensate for disadvantages.
- Dignity and justice. Defend the fundamental and human rights, and support the development of persons. Improve the public image of the Roma population, promote their citizenship and create the conditions for the Roma community to be a full member of society as a matter of right.
- Training, learning and participation. Involve Roma women and men in their self-promotion and facilitate their access to the means that make such promotion possible. Promote the development of the group, from a cultural perspective and through collective and identity promotion, and its participation in the development of the territory in which they live together with the rest of the population.
- Openness. Collaborate with different entities, join forces, promote networks. Collaborate with persons, associations, ONGs, platforms and organisms (public and private), that work towards the promotion of the Roma community.
Integral promotion
The work developed by the FSG aspires to the integral promotion of the Roma community in all its dimensions, including aspects such as the promotion of culture, identity and participation, and is particularly centred on the redress of the disadvantages of its most underprivileged members.
In order to achieve this objective, it develops two types of actions:
- Direct services to members of the Roma community to promote and improve their living conditions.
- Actions aimed at the advancement of more active policies targetting the Roma community.
These two lines of action are implemented through:
- Work towards the promotion and full incorporation of Roma men and women in society.
- Improvement of the public image of the Roma population and the diffusion of its cultural values in society.
- Development of promotional programmes in the fields of education, health, youth, employment, women, as well as those areas that contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the Roma community.
- Provision of information, training, orientation and advice services to associations, administrations and all entities that are interested in Roma issues.
- Development of sensitisation measures and campaigns of general interest with the purpose of bearing on the structural causes of inequality.
- Defense and support of the interests of the Roma population, at the national and international levels, by influencing the political decisions that affect the Roma community, in particular in the expanded European Union, and seeking to influence the policies affecting the Roma community in new member states.
